Annie shakes her head because she isn’t sure. And, normally, she’d want to downplay any indication of her uncertainty — that’s part of being a hero, after all — but this guy, Bucky, doesn’t seem to be panicking the way she’d expect of someone in his predicament. So she’s less concerned with being upfront with him.
It also tells her one of two things:
1) he could be a total nut job who’s normally on the torturing side of things.
Or 2) he’s more like her and has seen some bad shit because he’s running around trying to save people from it.
Annie’s not sure which it is, but she’s also not going to puzzle over it too hard. It doesn’t really matter right now. And if she does end up having to stick her hand in a bowl of acid for him she doesn’t need to knew how he’d been a serial killer or something when he’d been alive.
“I’m new,” she adds, pausing in her hunt for a good breaking spot. “Have you... have you been here a while? Does this happen a lot? Does anyone actually make good on the promises they leave in their instructions?”
