[Yugi of course knows how to play chess. Being taught all of the classic games was basically part of growing up with a Grandpa that owned a game shop and from whom he inherited a love of games. However, it isn't one that he's had a chance to go back to often. Grandpa preferred card games, Yugi was friendless and focused on the puzzle for so long, and when he did finally make friends-- well, Jounouchi would never be the chess type. Which was fine.
All of that to say that chess is a good pick to keep his interest for now. It's a new enough experience for him to consider that maybe this game will turn out different than the others.
Doesn't mean he still doesn't feel like crap. Kaiba being annoyed isn't the problem. King of Lame indeed.]
