He breathes a sigh of relief when it seems that his response was accepted and not resulting in more rage, a breath that he hadn't even realized he was holding since he spoke. He glances at Steve again, nervously, then down at the floor.

What is he supposed to say? What is the right approach to keep him placated? It doesn't seem like the man will accept him just saying he can choose instead. So... he needs to guess what Steve wants, then. Is that it? Does he even know him well enough to make such a guess? What if he gets it wrong?

His breaths are getting shallow again. Don't panic. He tries to ground himself by squeezing the edge of his seat until his fingers start hurting.
