He'd risen to his feet and reached out as if to stop the man, but he had no right. Steve let his arm drop and headed for the door, pushing it open to let Cain out first. He suppressed the shudders, managing to don a smile for the man. Cain had actually taken the breath to try and reassure him all was well when he knew damn well it wasn't. That deserved a reassurance things were fine. He could fall apart later in private.
